Sailing Through Surgery

Getting ready for surgery—and healing from it—requires more than just showing up and waiting for stitches to dissolve. Whether it's a routine procedure or something more complex, your body needs support before and after surgery to recover efficiently and lower the risk of complications. Fortunately, there are some very effective steps you can take to help your system heal faster and more completely.

Before Surgery: Build a Strong Foundation

Start by focusing on your nutrition. A diet rich in lean protein, leafy greens, and antioxidant-packed fruits supports tissue repair and immune readiness. Supplements like vitamin C, zinc, and magnesium can give your system an extra edge in healing and inflammation control.

Some individuals incorporate peptides like BPC-157 or TB-500 under medical supervision.
These regenerative compounds may help prime tissue for recovery and have shown promise in promoting cellular repair, although more human studies are ongoing. Always consult your healthcare provider before using peptides, especially before surgery.

Also, it may be counterintuitive, but starting a series of Hperbaric Oxygen "dives" BEFORE the surgery can drastically reduce healing time and discomfort, as well as SCARRING. By delivering concentrated oxygen in a pressurized chamber, HBOT helps boost oxygen supply to tissues, promoting faster repair and reducing inflammation. It's particularly useful in procedures with slower wound healing or a higher infection risk.We often think of hyperbaric oxygen treatment for healing a wound (surgical OR accidental) - but in using it before surgery it actually activates the healing cascades to continue to work for days and weeks. So as a tool for your upcoming surgery, consider doing 6-8 sessions BEFORE and 2-3 sessions after, if you are able. Another advantage of this is that many times you are not very keen to go out for appointments just after surgery and want to stay home and rest.

Make sure to stay hydrated, avoid alcohol and tobacco, and review any medications or supplements with your physician to minimize drug interactions or bleeding risks.

After Surgery: Support the Healing Process

Post-op care is just as important as prep. Stick closely to your discharge instructions and prioritize rest, hydration, and high-protein meals. Supplements such as collagen, L-glutamine, systemic enzymes, and vitamin D may support tissue repair and immune function during this phase.

Peptides may also be reintroduced at this stage—again, under medical guidance—to assist in soft tissue repair and reduce inflammation.

We really like Pulsed Electromagnetic Field mats such as BEMER device for healing and pain as well. This is another way to improve blood flow, oxygenation and detoxification of the tissues.(Many times our patients rent them in preparation for surgery recovery.)

Also, we often use stem cells or exosomes to promate healing and reduce inflammation. (These can be implemented before and/or after your operation).

The Takeaway

A successful recovery starts well before the first incision and continues long after the last bandage is removed. By combining sensible lifestyle choices with supportive therapies like HBOT, peptides, regenerative therapies, and nutritional supplements, you can help your body recover more efficiently and with fewer setbacks!

Always consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any new therapy. Healing is personal—give your body the care and resources it needs to do it well.
